Position Overview:

At Saab, we are constantly looking ahead and pushing boundaries on what´s considered technically possible. Saab is expanding in the UK and we are now seeking talented and highly motivated Mechanical Design Engineer to join our existing Mechanical Design Engineer to support our radar and sensors growth activities at our Fareham office.

Much of our current work is centred on the G1X radar, which is the newest radar in Saab’s portfolio – a software defined radar with a regular capability update cycle post-delivery, as well as an established production line. As a Mechanical Design Engineer you will regularly work with current products, developing enhancements, supporting obsolescence and investigating new areas for product growth.

Key Responsibilities:

As a Mechanical Design Engineer you will be responsible for various activities across the product lifecycle. Key responsibilities include:

  • Design and develop solutions to obsolescence challenges in mechanical aspects of sub-systems of current products
  • Design and develop cost-saving solutions for mechanical aspects of sub-systems of current products
  • Design and develop solutions to specific customer mechanical installation needs
  • Design and develop mechanical solutions for new products
  • Travel within UK and abroad, including to the Gothenburg office

Required Skills:

  • As a person you are positive, social, results-oriented and a team player with a background in mechanical engineering (5 years minimum), plus enjoy working and developing in a team
  • Experience of working within radar, communications or EW systems in considered highly desirable
  • Familiar working in a highly regulated Engineering environment e.g., Aerospace/Defence, Maritime, Automotive
  • Experience with configuration management tools and processes covering various stages of a product lifecycle.
  • Like cooperating with others but are capable of working individually as well
  • Good technical communication skills, confident in writing and reviewing formal technical documentation
  • Very good command of written and verbal English, ability to communicate efficiently with international colleagues from various engineering and non-engineering functions. Self-motivated to seek answers when information is limited and comfortable dealing with ambiguity
  • Have a Bachelors degree or equivalent
  • Experience with CAD using 3D parametric solid modelling techniques, simple stress analysis tools and hand calculations to develop, analyse and iterate a design
  • Capable of assessing production/supplier non-conformances then identifying, applying and documenting sound mechanical solutions
  • Experience creating and revising documents, models and drawings using configuration management software (e.g. Windchill, Enovia, Teamcenter, SmarTeam etc.) at various stages of a product’s lifecycle
  • Experience designing for rugged mechanical structures subject to harsh environments, incorporating low-volume machined metal and plastic, sheet metal, riveted and bolted sub-assemblies. Familiarity with composite materials (fibreglass, carbon fibre) and welding is a plus but not essential
  • Experience producing 2D technical drawings to BS8888 or ISO standards, with ability to interpret and apply geometric dimensioning and tolerancing. Experience with 3D model-based definition is highly desirable
  • Experience with rapid prototyping technologies desirable
  • During your employment you will handle tasks and materials that are classified as military secret and therefore you must have a UK or Swedish citizenship
